Blackberry Lemon Sparkler

Blackberry Lemon Sparkler

I’m a member of Treveri Cellars’s Bubble Club. It’s something my brother Korey thinks I should keep to myself. It probably doesn’t help that I say it with a country twang (ala Travis Tritt) as in–

I’m a member of the Bubble Club,
Sparkling wine is what I love.

Being part of the Bubble Club simply means that every couple of months I have two bottles of gorgeous, sparkling wine waiting for me.  The wines are perfect on their own. And they’re also fun to use for sparkling cocktails–like this Blackberry Lemon Sparkler I made the other day. It’s a great cocktail for the holidays! Make the blackberry puree ahead of time and keep it in the refrigerator or freezer.

Basic Berry Puree Recipe

  • 12 ounces (approximately 1 1/2 cups) fresh or frozen berries, (defrosted if frozen)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons freshly-squeezed lemon juice
  1. Sort and wash berries. Drain, cap, and stem (or thaw if frozen) unsweetened berries.
  2. In a food processor fitted with the metal blade, combine berries, sugar, and lemon juice; process to a smooth puree, about 30 seconds. NOTE: Pureeing may be done in a blender or a food processor, but if using a blender, make sure that any seeds are not ground so finely that they will pass through the sieve.
  3. Pour into a fine sieve set over a bowl. Use a rubber spatula to stir and press the puree through the sieve; discard solids.
  4. Taste and add more sugar if necessary. Refrigerate in a non-reactive container for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 2 months. Yield approximately 1 cup of finished puree.

Blackberry Lemon Sparkler

  • 1 sugar cube
  • 1 squeeze of lemon (about 1/2 tsp)
  • 1 oz. blackberry puree
  • Sparkling white wine
  1. Wet the top of a champagne glass with a slice of lemon, dip in sugar
  2. Add sugar cube to bottom of glass
  3. Squeeze lemon wedge into glass
  4. Add blackberry puree
  5. Top with sparkling white wine
  6. Enjoy!

Cheers & Happy Holidays!

Shop Local for Great Holiday Gifts

Shop Local for Great Holiday Gifts

We are fortunate in Yakima to have world-class wine, talented artists and people committed to producing high-quality food. Chances are your community offers great things too! Sometimes it’s a matter of driving off the beaten path–out of the way of the big box stores. Around the corner you may very well find your new favorite thing. And thank goodness for Google. Because sometimes a Google search is all it takes to find just what you are looking for in your hometown.

The holiday season is a great time to get out in your community and shop locally. It’s the ultimate way to find unique, one-of-a-kind gifts and support your local businesses. Click here to see the economic impact that shopping locally has on your community.

We thought we would offer just a sampling of ideas…….

1.  Handmade Soaps
I love goat’s milk and shea butter soap! When they are made with all-natural ingredients they are better for your skin than commercially made versions. We have a few soap makers in Yakima. One of my favorites is The Little Soapmaker. (image via Ellie’s Handmade Soap)

2. Local Honey
When Mandi and I were at the Central Washington State Fair for our cooking demonstration, we had a chance to see the Central Washington Beekeepers Association display. At the end of the day Dylan, Kendall, Taylor, Sophie and I watched the beekeepers extract honey. The girls got to taste the freshly extracted honey and honeycomb. It was a real treat! There are many benefits to eating local honey instead of what you normally find on grocery store shelves. Look up your local beekeepers association to find honey producers near you.

3.  Lavender & Flower Farms
I love the smell of dried lavender. I’ve even had lavender tea cookies that, although may sound weird, were actually quite delicious! You can find dried lavender and a variety of lavender goods at Selah Ridge lavender Farm.

4.  Sweet & Salty Treats
It’s no secret that we love Copper Pot Caramels and pretzels from The Pretzel Lady. But there are numerous other treats to be found in the Valley–like caramel apple pies (now available frozen if you want to bake your own) at Johnson Orchards. Go into any gift shop in Yakima and you are bound to find locally made sweet & salty treats that you will want to stuff into stockings everywhere.

5.  Hometown Gift Shops & Indie Bookstores
Find the perfect gift for each person on your list by shopping your locally owned gift shops and independent bookstores. We are lucky to have Inklings Bookshop, Fiddlesticks and  all in Yakima filled to the brim with fun things galore. We also have a ton of antique and second-hand stores just waiting to be explored. Find your local Indie Bookstore here. (image shown, Illume candle sold at Inklings Bookshop)

6.  Local Etsy Sellers
Etsy is a great place to find one-of-a-kind art and handmade goods. It is also home to stores filled with vintage finds. Did you know you can do a custom search in Etsy to find sellers in your hometown?  If you are local, simply click the title above for Yakima-based Etsy sellers. (image ViAnneli)

7.  Wineries & Breweries
Your hometown may not be as well covered with wineries and breweries as we are here in the Yakima Valley. But it’s worth a look around. And if you don’t find what you are looking for, plan a trip to our neck of the woods (actually high desert) and we will show you around. (Image shown Masset Le Petit Rouge)

8.  Farms & Creameries
Those who know me well know that I have an affinity (maybe an obsession) for good cheese. Nearby is Tieton Farm & Creamery where they make artisan goat cheese. My favorite way to serve goat cheese is covered with saffron honey (preferably locally harvested) with flatbread crisps.

9. Locally Manufactured Goods
We have this ultra-hip and eco-friendly company in the area called Liberty Bottleworks. Check out their website for proof of their cool-ness factor. They make the only American-made metal water bottles and they use recycled materials. You can even custom design your own for gifts or marketing purposes.

10. Experiences (not pictured)
Of course, another ultra eco-friendly gift suggestion is to give experiences. Pay for someone to go ice skating or to the movies. Buy tickets for a live theater or music event. We just went to see Annie the musical at our local theater. The girls adored it! When all other things are long gone, memories will remain.

So get out there and explore your hometown and support local businesses in the process.

Have a favorite shop that you think others must know about? Let us know. We are always up for exploring and discovering new places and things.

Wine Table Wednesday: Treveri

Wine Table Wednesday: Treveri

Recently, Stacie and I spent a day getting creative and covering ourselves in glitter and glue.  Some of the results are below, including the cocktail we rewarded ourselves with in the (late . . . mid?) afternoon.

Some ideas for our Thanksgiving tables in gold, bronze and orange hues:

  • Glitter pumpkin candles (learn how to make them)
  • Soft gold tablecloth
  • Part of an old Champagne crate–used as a trivet
  • Antique candle holders
  • Clear glass vases with fall foliage
  • You’ll have to use your imagination for the food:  I’m dreaming of a giant turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce & pumpkin pie
  • Treveri sparkling wine (see cranberry lime cocktail below)

Stacie and I have written about Treveri many times, not only because they make festive sparkling wines, but because they are constantly creating wonderful experiences.  Whether you visit their tasting rooms for events or just to sample the selection, each visit is an occasion.  And that makes Treveri’s wines perfect for November’s special day.

Wine Table Wednesday: Masset

Wine Table Wednesday is a series this Fall where we highlight some of our favorite local wines and offer food suggestions. We, in no way, consider ourselves wine experts and we know nothing about food pairings. We just know what we like to eat and drink. We hope you enjoy.

On The Table–

Rosemary Lemon Drop

Rosemary Lemon Drop

The June 2012 edition of Better Homes and Gardens was in my mailbox on Friday. Even in these days of obsession I still love getting a magazine in the mail. I know, not very green of me, but I can’t help it.

I opened it up and one of the first things I saw was a recipe for a Rosemary Lemon Drop. You had me at Lemon Drop sir.

I had planned to host a dessert and drink event at my house for my sister’s birthday. It was the perfect excuse to try this recipe. [Read more...]

An Evening at Naches Heights Vineyard

An Evening at Naches Heights Vineyard

Last weekend we met a group of friends at the newly opened Naches Heights Vineyard (NHV).  We’ve been watching the building progress over the last few months from our perch at The Tasting Room (just up the hill from NHV).   And we were certainly not disappointed once we got a close-up look:

Easy Oreo Truffles

Easy Oreo Truffles

One of the best parts about our recent excursion to the local Red Wine & Chocolate event was–well the chocolate. The offerings varied. Gilbert Cellars had designer truffles with bling.

Bonair Winery had beautiful displays of truffle grape clusters. [Read more...]

Lovely Day in Wine Country

Lovely Day in Wine Country

Oh, the sunshine was out last Sunday . . . finally, finally.  In and of itself that made me one happy gal.  Then we hopped into the truck with Stacie and Dylan and headed to some of the Rattlesnake Hills’ wineries.  Sunshine, wine and friends–voilà!

Our first stop was Masset Winery.  We tasted some delicious reds paired with dark chocolate truffle brownies.  Our favorite wines:  2005 Cabernet Sauvignon and le Petit Rouge. [Read more...]

Out and About This Weekend

Out and About This Weekend

If you’re a local, there are some great events to participate in this weekend.  Or, if you live in or around Washington state, these events are worth a weekend trip.

In a recent post, I mentioned the Hurry Up, Spring Arts & Crafts Fair at Glenwood Square this Saturday, February 18, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  The event includes more than 50 artisans, live music and wine tasting at Zesta Cucina. The parking lot is sure to be full, so arrive early, carpool or park a few blocks away and walk.

The other highlight this weekend is Red Wine & Chocolate, my hands down favorite Yakima Valley wine event!  A few years ago I found myself holding a small chocolate cup full of sweet, heady port.  Perfection.  Drinking from a chocolate vessel–how poetic is that?  Needless to say, you can’t miss when 50 wineries pair their best reds with the yummiest chocolate creations they can get their hands on.
